Phillip Alfred Szymkowicz, a retired United States Air Force Major, passed away peacefully in Portland Oregon. Born on January 21, 1940, in Providence, Rhode Island, Phillip dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, professionalism, and courage.
Phillip was a 1958 graduate of Cranston High School and went on to attend Alliance College transferring to the University of Rhode Island as a 1963 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.
Phillip was a distinguished veteran, Major Szymkowicz served 20 years and 11 months in the United States Air Force as an Air Weapons Director Staff Officer. Throughout his career, he exhibited exceptional leadership and dedication to duty. His service spanned multiple roles and responsibilities, including assignments at Peterson Air Force Base,Colorado, where he made a lasting impact on his colleagues and the mission. Major Szymkowicz’s exemplary service earned him numerous accolades and decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters (OLCs), Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 OLCs, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with V Device and 6 OLCs, and the Combat Readiness Medal. He was further recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 10 OLCs, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 4 OLCs, among others.
Phillip was a man of great strength, discipline, and character, always striving to uphold the values of service before self. Beyond his military accomplishments, when Phillip retired in 1988,
he spent his time as an avid hiker and Salmon fisherman. In life Phillip was a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Felix John Szymkowicz and Helen Szetela Szymkowicz. He is survived by his sisters JoAnne Rzepnicki of Venice, Florida and Paula Sims of Naples, Florida and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service to honor his life and service will be held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, at a date yet to be determined. Arrangements by Westside Cremation and Burial Services in Beaverton, Oregon.
Major Phillip Szymkowicz will be laid to rest with full military honors, a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to the defense and protection of his nation. May he rest in peace, having left a legacy of service, sacrifice, and love. “Aim High...Fly-Fight-Win”
