John Smith Obituary

John Richard Smith, 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Hillsboro, Oregon on the evening of Friday, May 24, 2024. He had fought a fierce battle with an aggressive cancer since January.

John was born in Massachusetts and spent much of his life on the East Coast. He moved his family to Oregon to grow his career in the high tech industry. In his final years of life, he retired and traded his cubicle for the great outdoors.

Characterized for his thick Boston accent, quick wit, and generosity, John is remembered by all he met. Friends are fortunate to have his fine woodworking living on in their homes, all of which was crafted in his garage while NPR played in the background. A true outdoorsman donned in a flannel shirt, John felt a campfire was appropriate anytime. His fishing pole, bird guide, and mushroom foraging basket were always within arms reach.

John is survived by his two children and former wife. His son lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and John’s only grandson. His daughter lives in Medellín, Colombia with her husband. In his final months, his children cared for him and held his hands at his last breath. He joins his father Arthur, mother Dorothy, and sister Beth in spirit.

In his honor, donations can be made to organizations John loved:
