Gary Irwin Obituary

Gary Lynn Irwin of Beaverton, Oregon passed away at the age of 58, surrounded by family, after a brief battle with cancer.  Born in Tacoma, Washington to Mildred and Byno “Bud” Irwin, Gary was a dedicated athlete, excelling in both soccer and basketball as a youth and through his graduation from Stadium High School in 1984.

Gary excelled academically, as well. He earned a Civil Engineering degree from Washington State University in 1988 and moved to California, starting his career with the city of Los Angeles Public Works Department, where he met his life partner, Tonya.  He received his Hazardous Waste Certification from U of Ca.- L.A. and pursued master’s studies in Environmental Engineering through Georgia Institute of Technology.

Gary relocated to Portland, Or. in 1995 for brief employment with Century West Engineering, before devoting the rest of his working life to the City of Portland Environmental Services. His decade-long commitment to the Sewer Overflow Program culminated in its successful conclusion in 2011, significantly contributing to the cleanup of the Willamette River for future generations.

Gary was an exceptional leader who took pride in mentoring, supporting, and backing his colleagues. He was an avid sports enthusiast, enduring an undying dedication to Washington State University football and basketball. Gary was also known for his dry sense of humor, his love of hard rock music, fine food, wine, and whisky. He enjoyed reading books about history, serving up a great meal and being the first player to sink the 8 ball.

Gary is survived by his life partner Tonya Halog and their dog Murphy.  He is also survived by sister Linda Busch (Richard), brother Ted Irwin (Lori), niece Angela Wunder (Jason), nephews Cavan Busch, Michael Irwin (Barbara), Christopher Irwin, and Taylor Irwin (Elvia).  He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael, sister Connie, and loving canine companions Baloo and Tigger.
